Most statements that begin with “it’s that time of year again…” are referring to something joyful, like the holidays or a birthday or daily temperatures above 65 degrees, but today we have to say with grim consternation: it’s that time of year again…flu season. Yikes.
The coughing, the sniffling, the body aches, the chills…nobody has time for that funny business these days. Whether you’re a believer in the flu shot or not, we’ve got a few quick and easy tips for keeping your immune system strong and sickness at bay.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar – most people are put off by the intense taste and smell but it is a powerhouse what it comes to keeping your gut healthy (which is often the first place your immune system takes a cue from to either thrive or fail). If you can’t stand throwing back a shot mix a tablespoon or two with water and apple or grape juice. Braggs (the most popular brand) is also now making “drinking vinegar” in hopes of making this elixir easier for consumption.
2. All The Garlic – seriously, it helps ward off the nasty enzymes and bacteria that cause the common cold, which lead to the flu. Throw some extra cloves in your dinner or pop a garlic supplement (fun fact: it also helps with mosquitos in the summertime!)
3. Hydrate – more water than you think is humanly possible. Flushing your system out at the very first sign of sickness may keep you from falling fully ill, plus it’s just generally good for you.
4. Wellness Tea – a cup of tea is great for keeping your throat clear and hot water is great for your gut, plus it helps most people relax. Look for wholesome teas that include Echinacea, dandelion root, and ginger.
5. Relax – speaking of things that help you relax…do them. Stress plays one of the biggest roles in a broken immune system. The more you can do to reduce it the better.
6. SLEEP – probably the head honcho of all wellness tips! Get. Your. Sleep. Most of us live our lives moderately sleep deprived and it’s not okay. Find a way to get your 8 hours and you’ll be amazed at the myriad of life benefits, including staying healthy through flu season!
